I was verbally given a target in my job role and told when I reached this target I would get an increase.

The target was reached for two months and was told there is no way you are getting this increase.

Is a verbal agreement binding?

While a verbal agreement may be binding, it depends on the circumstances and interpretation of your employment agreement. If there is a non-variation clause in your employment contract (which typically says that no variation of the contract would be binding unless it is reduced to writing and signed by both parties), your employer might argue that there is no provision for increases, that the verbal agreement sought to vary the existing contract, and because it is not in writing, it is not valid. Check your contract.

In any event, any verbal agreement is hard to prove. If you followed any legal process, you would have to prove the existence of the agreement regarding an increase.

It is always advisable to have any agreement in writing and signed by both parties.
