How legally binding is an email offer?

Email received on 17 April 2014: "Kindly be informed that your application for the XXX Training was successful. A formal letter will be sent to you before the end of next week (25th April 2014) confirming this. The anticipated start date is 05th May 2014." I quit my job with less than a month's notice in order to be available on the anticipated start date. On 25 April when we were to expect the legal documents the following email was sent (only at my prompting, not because they were proactively communicating): "Note that there are no documents that have been sent to you yet. I will be sending you the following documents as soon as they are signed by the GM-Human Resources: · Letter of acceptance · Contract of training programme Kindly expect them before the end of the month of May 2014." Later that day the following email is sent: "Due to unforeseen circumstances, the start date for the Helicopter Pilot Training Programme has been moved to the 01st August 2014. A formal letter addressing your appointment will be sent to you in due course." This start date was subsequently delayed by 2-3 months at a time without being offered a reason but only apologies for the inconvenience. Our training has not started to date. A group of 4 of us have been without employment or any kind of remuneration or stipend since May 2014. All offers were accepted in email correspondence by the candidates. Please advise where we stand legally to be able to enforce some kind of reimbursement from the company for the months without income or training based on the email correspondence furnished above. Really appreciate your help!

It's possible that there may be an entitlement to damages due to misrepresentation. See an attorney to get an opinion.
